Picking up email from other ISPs

You can pick up your email by accessing the Internet anywhere in the world, once on the Internet you can log onto Hunter Point Online's mail server and pick-up your email. Here is how you do it on a Windows machine.

Step1:

Note: The following instructions are assume that you are using your own computer such as a lap top. If you are using a computer that is already set up to access the Internet from some other service skip ahead to Step 4.

Go to the Start menu/Setting/Control Panel and double click on the "Network" icon to open it. Highlight "TCP/IP" and click on the "Properties" button. Click on the "Gateway" tab and remove any IP address from the "Installed gateways" box. Next, click on the "DNS Configuration" tab and select the "Disable DNS" radio button (all the boxes below should turn gray). Click "OK" to close the TCP/IP Properties and "OK" again to close the "Network" screen. Your computer should ask to restart, click "Yes" and let your computer restart.

Step 2:

You will need to have the access phone number and DNS numbers (IP addresses) for the ISP (Internet Service Provider) you will be access while traveling before you begin this next step.

Assuming all windows are closed, double click on "My Computer" to open it. Locate the "Dial-Up Networking" folder and double click on it to open. You should see the "hpo.net" icon and "Make New Connection" icon, leave the "hpo.net" icon for when you return to Japan. Next, double click on the "Make New Connection" to start the Wizard, enter the name of the ISP you will be accessing in the first screen, e.g. "Earthlink". Next, enter all relevant information that the wizard asks for and click "Finished" at the end. You will now see the new icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder. Right click on that icon and select "Properties". When the screen comes up click on the "Server Type" button. In the next screen click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button. At the top of this screen select "Server assigned IP address" radio button. In the next set of radio buttons down, select "Specify name server address" then enter the "Primary DNS" and the "Secondary DNS" numbers of the ISP you will be access on your trip (sometimes there is only one DNS number, in that case leave the "0"s in the "Secondary DNS"). Click "OK" to close all the screens and close any windows you may have open.

Step 3:

Next step assumes you are using Windows with Internet Explorer 4.0 or later installed on your system.

Go to the "Start menu/Settings/Control Panel and double click on the "Internet" icon. Click on the "Connection" tab to bring it forward. Select "Connect to the Internet using a modem" if not already selected. Click on the "Settings" button. In the "Dial-Up Settings" screen, click on the "triangle" to pull down a menu on the right of "Use the following........" and select the DUN connection you created in the last step. It should appear in the box at the top after you release the mouse. Below, enter your "UserID" and "Password" you will be using to access your ISP while traveling, leave the "Domain" blank unless otherwise instructed. Click "OK" to close that screen, click "Apply" then "OK". Close all windows you may have opened.

Step 4:

You will need to know the ISP's Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) address for the next step, e.g. mail.earthlink.com.

Outlook Express:
Start Outlook Express, open the Tools menu and select Accounts.Make sure your account it highlighted then click the Properties button. On the General tab, make sure that your HPO email address in entered in the Return Address field. Click on the Servers tab and enter the following:
Outgoing mail (SMTP): The ISP's mail server address, eg. mail.earthlink.com
Incoming mail (POP3): mail.hpo.net
Log on using: Select this radio button if it isn't highlighted
Account name: your HPO UserID (UserName)
Password: Your HPO Password (It is case sensitive, make sure it is in UPPER and lower case).
Click the Apply button in the lower right corner, then click OK and Close to return to the mail program. You are ready.

Netscape Communicator
Start Netscape Communicator, open the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences". Click on the "Plus" (+) sign next to Mail & Groups then click on Mail Server. Leave your UserID in the Mail server user name box. If you are going to be sending email you will have to delete "mail.hpo.net" from the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server and put the address of the ISP's mail server here, eg. mail.earthlink.com. You will have to do this as we do not allow mail to pass through our mail server sent from other ISPs. This is a standard policy of most ISPs these days to prevent "Spamming" and/or "mail booming". Leave mail.hpo.net in the Incoming mail server box, this is how your email program will find our mail server to pick up your email. Click OK to close that screen. That's it. If you are traveling around a lot and accessing several ISPs you will have to do this each time you access a different ISP. You can delete any of the ISP's icons in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder when you leave that provider's area. It looks like a lot of work but once you do it once it's pretty simple. I hope this helps you.
